The Camino

Modern touches elevate
a traditional Mexican eatery.

The Camino

Interiors

When two friends came to A&E Design with a plan for a new restaurant in Missoula, Montana, their dream inspired us. Having traveled throughout Mexico researching, these co-owners knew how to bring authenticity to this themed eatery and agave bar. We reflected that passion with textile, pattern, and color combinations that exude the laid-back way of life they love. Today, The Camino is a social hub serving traditional Mexican food and spirits with modern flair.

When two friends came to A&E with a plan for a new restaurant in Missoula, Montana, their dream inspired us.

Getting the vibe right

The restauranteurs took dozens of trips to Oaxaca, Mexico, connecting with farmers, researching produce and proteins, and testing mezcal varieties. They desired a space to transport guests to relax and socialize in their favorite destination, enhanced by authentic, hand-crafted cuisine. We incorporated natural elements, like reclaimed wood and wicker, to portray the beachy vibe perfect for a five o’clock unwinding.

An eclectic aesthetic

Our design team infused modern Mexican style to mirror the menu throughout The Camino’s interior. Pink flamingos and palm fronds cover the restroom walls, while a coyote statue gives a nod to the brand’s logo. We curated contrasting touches, like panel draperies against rough concrete walls, giving the space texture and grounding the unique ambiance.

Engineering a lively atmosphere

The “Camino” translates to the “Way” in Spanish, so we created a distinctive path to the Mexican dining experience. The agave bar activates the space at its center, while an adjacent standing bar invites patrons to congregate together. We used backlit concrete cinder blocks to separate the bar from the dining area and provide visual interest throughout. An open chef’s kitchen with seating enhances the culinary and social experience for guests.

The “furnishing” touches

As part of our holistic design services, A&E Design specializes in full FF&E procurement. Through our sister company, Studio Provision, we provided all the finishing touches for The Camino. From the moment guests approach this restaurant, they see patio furniture, bar seating, light sources, and other carefully chosen items that we sourced for this restaurant’s south-of-the-border aesthetic.
