St. Francis K-8 School

ARCHITECTURE

To satisfy a growing population, the design of St. Francis K-8 School combined three aging facilities into one, state-of-the-art school. The layout strategically organizes various grade levels into “neighborhoods,” with classrooms bordering a flexible, shared teaching area. Lower grade levels accommodate large-group gathering for specialized instruction, while upper grade levels create a variety of spaces with amenities for display, presentation, and small group collaboration.

A spiritual concept

The design incorporates a student chapel to reinforce the school’s ideology. An abstraction of stained glass provides privacy between the chapel and surrounding spaces, flooding the interior with vibrant bursts of color. The colorful panes of glass radiate a soft glow at night, serving as a beacon of light for the campus.

The heart of the school

The commons serves as the core gathering space, central to school activities and vital to overall circulation. The fundamental space is directly adjacent to the chapel to promote school culture among students, faculty, and the community.

Designing a unified campus

To create a unified campus with the neighboring church, the exterior utilized shared materials to achieve a cohesive aesthetic. Landscaping, parking, and outdoor playgrounds were thoughtfully designed to align with existing parish facilities.

Facilities for athletic excellence

A new gymnasium offers students ample opportunities for athletic activities, both during and after school. Strategically located adjacent to the parking lot and separate from primary learning spaces, the gym efficiently accommodates after-hours events, equipped for secure public use. State-of-the-art locker rooms support not only K-8 athletes, but also provide separate space for high school athletes utilizing the campus football field.
