The stunning renovation and thoughtful expansion of Columbus Elementary School not only addressed critical inefficiencies and overcrowding, but created an innovative, 21st-century learning environment where young minds can flourish.

The design team met with stakeholders to identify needs and define goals, then engaged in an extensive master planning effort and led a successful bond campaign to fund the renovations and expansion.

Efficient design and durable, low-maintenance materials significantly reduce long-term operational costs and maintenance needs, while improved circulation and secure building entry solved safety issues. Renovated, expanded spaces inspire creativity and advanced learning. A new commons and cafeteria support community activities, and new playground areas provide age-appropriate places for physical activity and fun. The sandstone “school” sign from the city’s original schoolhouse is prominently displayed in the reception area to pay homage to the district’s heritage and preserve its history.
