When structural deficiencies forced the closure of Helena’s historic Central School, the loss was felt deeply by the community. Partnering with the Helena School District, we set out to design a new 64,000-square-foot elementary school that would carry forward the spirit and history of the original building while meeting the needs of 21st-century learners.
The new structure mirrors the historic façade along Warren Avenue, with its prominent east entry aligned to 8th Avenue. Carefully preserved elements from the former school—and even earlier buildings on the site – are woven into the design: the original brass bell, granite wall caps, pediments, the school’s main arch, and portions of historic stairs and doors all have a place in the new Central.
Inside, the school is organized into learning communities of two to three classrooms sharing a central collaborative space, promoting community, flexibility, and connection. Specialty areas, including a Life Skills classroom and the adaptable “da Vinci Room” Maker Space, ensure inclusivity and innovation for all students.
Opened in summer 2019, Central Elementary once again anchors its neighborhood – rooted in history, ready for the future.
