Considered the “hearthstone” of Montana State University-Billings, the Student Union Building provides a central gathering space for students, faculty, and guests. A renovation transformed the existing 1980’s building into a modern environment to accommodate the University’s academic and recreation needs. New amenities elevate the student experience, including a recreation lounge, bookstore, café, and coffee bar. Previously located across campus, the Academic Support Center was integrated into the new building to create a collegiate atmosphere. A warm color palette with playful fixtures creates an inviting interior, encouraging students to remain on campus throughout the school day.

An academic cornerstone

The bookstore was redesigned to provide better student and public access. An expansion into the southern hallway provided a more open and transparent layout, allowing users to walk through the store to reach both ends of the building.

A student-inspired space

A user assessment gathered feedback from students to identify key project goals. By providing ample lounge space, areas for social connection, and accessible new technology, the design responds to how students live, work, and play.
