ALPS Offices

A modern design elevated by historic elements.

ALPS Offices

ARCHITECTURE   |   INTERIORS

The design of the ALPS Offices infuses the two-story space with a rustic-modern feel, defined by sleek, clean lines and raw, natural materials. By artfully exposing various structural elements, the building’s unique construction plays a central role in the interior concept. Original, exposed concrete beams and walls provide not only an industrial aesthetic to the contemporary design, but connect the space with its historical context. The reception area showcases reclaimed wood from an adjacent mercantile building to further tie the design to its location in downtown Missoula, while vintage Post Office boxes and mail chutes from the original 1940’s design provide historic character.

Transformative elements of design

Constructed of wood and steel, a floating, central stair serves as a primary design focus while creating circulation throughout the space and providing connectivity between both floors. A massive skylight allows natural light to stream through the core of the building, while a spacious roof top patio provides users with a unique perspective of the city below.

A landmark of downtown Missoula

Housed in the historic Florence Building, the ALPS Offices occupy 15,000 sf within the National Register listed building. The design team worked closely with the Missoula Historic Preservation Commission to ensure the design satisfied the established standards for historic properties.

Bringing a historic building into a new era

A primary focus of the renovation included upgrading all mechanical, electrical, IT, and plumbing systems to transform the existing space into a contemporary office with state-of-the-art technology. The design team successfully completed the complex challenge of upgrading the uppermost floors without disrupting the system operations of the five, fully occupied floors below.
